Building Our Home

Hey guys, happy Thursday! I’m so excited to be sharing parts of our home with you today. Before we dive in, I do want to ask everyone to pray with me the rest of this week for those in the path of Hurricane Florence! My sister in law Sara, her husband Ethan and our niece Bennett live in North Carolina and are hunkering down for the storm. Praying everyone makes smart decisions and everyones friends and family are safe!!

Ok now onto our home!

Will and I have been married for almost 11 months now (where does the time go?!?)  and we are still creating our home together! Both of us lived on our own prior to getting married but have moved from 2 different states and left our furniture behind. So starting from scratch has been a fun way to create our own style together. A sllllloooooow process, but still fun!

The first few months of our marriage we actually lived on the lower level of Wills parents home. We were unsure if we would be staying in Florida (depending on Will’s job) and did not want to commit to a lease or purchasing a home. It was a huge blessing for us to stay with them and made it even more fun to wait and open our wedding gifts once we moved into a place of our own!

We started by buying a mattress (which we bought on wayfair.com without even trying it!!) Thankfully when it was delivered and we tested it out it felt AMAZING! We now call it our “cloud” haha. We are still on the hunt for a headboard / bead frame so if you have any recommendations please leave a comment!

Next we went to IKEA in hopes of finding a couch. We didn’t want to spend a ton but still wanted something we could have for a while and that looked nice! We actually found one that felt really comfortable so we ordered it for delivery. Once it arrived, I put it together to surprise Will before he got home from work, and once I put the cushions on I realized… it was in the top 5 most uncomfortable things I had ever sat on!!! I tried to convince my self in my head I liked it because we were so happy to finally have a place to sit but after avoiding sitting on the couch due to its lack of comfort we’ve decided to return it. Luckily IKEA has an AWESOME return policy and we are looking at investing in designing a custom sofa with down cushions. Finding a couch you love and actually want to snuggle up and watch a movie on is totally worth it in my opinion!

Actually for the first few months of renting our apartment we had no light in our bedroom! With only having a bed and uncomfortable couch, we would primarily utilize our bed for seating if we were hanging out or working. Our ceiling fan does not have a light fixture attached to it and since we didn’t find nightstands we liked until recently we were holding off on buying lamps. We would turn the closet light on at night if we were hanging out hahah! Memorial day weekend we went up to spend the night at my in-laws house. The next day my mother in law and I went shopping and she offered to let me pick out a pair of lamps as our house warming gift! I don’t think anyone has ever been as excited about lamps as Will and I were once we put them in our room! Little moments that seem normal to most people have been such treasures for Will and I. And I’m so grateful that we started with practically nothing and have built this for ourselves!

The last 2 larger pieces we’ve purchased thus far are 2 linen accent chairs (LOVE) and 2 night stands! Piecing together our home slowly has been a way for us to find and fill our home with things we actually enjoy. Although we are still currently using a cardboard box as our coffee table, we are finding a true appreciation in the pieces we are buying. Neither of us wanted to buy just to fill our home up, but we wanted to love the pieces we are using to build our home together. All of the small accents have been fun for me in particular to place around! I find such joy in curating a balanced bookcase or built in shelf.

Our place is “slowly but surely” coming together and I wouldn’t have it any other way! I will be writing updates as we add things to our space! I’d love for you to share some of your favorite thing about YOUR home and maybe something you remember from your first home in the comments below!!!

*New blog posts will be up at 6am (EST) every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday!!*

Thank you so much for spending a part of your day with me!!!

  1. Hi Rebecca,

I love your nightstands, care to share where you found them?

One of my favorite pieces of furniture I found at a 2nd hand store. It is a glass front distressed book shelf, I love books so a perfect match for me.

  2. For the bed frame, I would seriously recommend Ikea! everyone in my family has one from Ikea & we love them!! they’re affordable but also super cute with a bunch of different styles. most of them come in with its own built-in headboard too. if you strictly want just a headboard, i’d check overstock.com!

    1. This is so helpful, I’m glad that you’ve had a great experience, I’m going to check them out!! Thank you so much for your comment 🙂 Miss you friend!!
